PORTHMADOG-BASED glassmaker Bill Swann has work on display at Oriel Môn Anglesey.
A Flight of Thoughts is the title for a new exhibition of work by Bill and stone carver Meic Watts.
The exhibition relates to the flight patterns of birds, and the artists’ individual and collaborative thoughts on how to portray this theme together.
It features a sculpture of 140 hand-carved individual slate feathers to form a two-metre wingspan, together with pictures and sculptures, including a wall of murmuring starlings in slate and glass measuring eight metres.
Bill and Meic met 36 years ago at a slate carving workshop where Meic was teaching and Bill was on the course. Meic had previously been on glass workshops taught by Bill. They both admired each others work and techniques and decided to create a piece together which resulted in The Lighthouse, a large glass and slate sculpture exhibited and sold in Anglesey.
Since that time they have worked on various projects together for both public and private commissions.
Their joint links were a love of nature and with a particular interest in birds and starling murmurations on the marshlands of the Llŷn Peninsular.
Both artists have exhibited at Oriel Môn before, Bill with one-man exhibition, The Colour of India, relating to teaching in Kolkata and travelling through India, and Meic as part of Alchemica and Birds of Wales.
Bill has exhibited in the UK, Japan, Germany, Holland and New York, and Meic across Europe and in Hong Kong. Both artists are pleased to have the opportunity to exhibit together at Oriel Môn again.
“Oriel Môn is not afraid to allow their chosen artists to create an atmosphere and experience for visitors, with the support of the gallery staff, away from the normal concept of an art gallery,” said Bill.
The exhibition is on until Sunday, 6 November.
