A singer-songwriter from Llanllyfni has scooped this year’s Cân i Gymru prize.
Fel Hyn ‘Da Ni Fod by Elidyr Glyn was voted the best song during a live show filmed at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Friday night as the iconic competition celebrated its 50th birthday.
Speaking after the competition, Elidyr said: “It has been an amazing experience being part of this year’s competition. I have had amazing support from family and friends who travelled down from Aberystwyth to be here with me tonight. Thanks to them all and to everybody who voted for me too. I am delighted.”
The 2019 competition was launched back in autumn last year with a closing date of 4 January for entries.
A panel of four judges, including Ryland Teifi, Kizzy Crawford, Geraint Lovgreen and Non Parry, narrowed the entries down to the eight songs that would appear in the final round on the Cân i Gymru programme.
Elidyr won the Cân i Gymru 2019 trophy, a prize of £5,000 and the opportunity to compete in the Pan Celtic Festival in Ireland in April.
Gewn Ni Weld Sut Eith Hi by Rhydian Meilyr took second place and a £2,000 prize and LOL by Dyfrig Evans came third with a prize of £1,000.
Siôn Llwyd from Avanti Media, which produces the programme on behalf of S4C, said the night of the 50th anniversary Cân i Gymru competition had been unforgettable.
“Congratulations to Elidyr Glyn and to each and every one of the performers and composers who took part in Cân i Gymru this year – it has been an amazing night,” he said.
“The standard of the artists taking part bodes well for the future of Cân i Gymru and the future of Welsh music.”
