A RESIDENT in a Meirionnydd nursing home who lost over 10 per cent of their bodyweight in just three months was put at “serious nutritional risk” according to a damning report.

The case, one of many listed against the Bay Nursing Home in Tywyn, pictured, was part of a recently published report by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW) which heavily criticised the care home, capable of accommodating up to 30 older people.

A non-compliance notice has been issued against the home, which is owned by JSB Healthcare Ltd.

Resident ‘B’ lost 6.4kg between 29 December 2016 and 25 March 2017 which is considered a “significant loss” for a person who had weighed less than 50kg.

According to the CSSIW, there was no evidence resident ‘B’ had been referred to a dietician or had their diet fortified over those three months and action was only taken following the intervention of a Betsi Cadwaladr nurse.

Another patient, who was “continuously coughing”, was recommended to have a chest x-ray by a GP in early January but was left “at risk” for 20 days before the medical procedure was carried out.

The home’s acting manager was unable to explain why the x-ray had not been arranged before that time.See this week's north editions for the full story, in shops and online now
