People in the Dyfi Valley are desperate to see progress on the project to provide a new Ysgol Bro Hyddgen building, Machynlleth’s county councillor has said.

Powys County Council wants to provide a new school building for the all-through Ysgol Bro Hyddgen, but the scheme stalled when contractors Dawnus went bust.

While Dawnus was only contracted to produce plans for the Bro Hyddgen scheme, it has led to a delay to the project, currently estimated to be around a year.

Powys council has said it hopes to start the tender process before the end of this year to identify a new contractor for the scheme.

A spokesperson said: “No new contractor is in place at this stage.

“The council is hoping to issue tender documents by the end of the year.”

Machynlleth councillor Michael Williams said he had been given assurances that the new school was still a priority for Powys council, but said that people in Machynlleth and the Dyfi Valley would be happier when a contractor is appointed and work is taking place.

He said: “It is a worry for people in the Dyfi Valley. There is no doubt about it being a worry considering the circumstances around the original contractor.

“Whilst I do appreciate that all of these matters take time, the sooner the preferred contractor is appointed and work begins on the site, the better it will be and happier everyone will be.

“Then people will know for sure that the new school will happen."
