THOUGHTFUL students in Blaenau are doing there bit to support those who need the most help in their area.
Year 10 pupils from Ysgol y Moelwyn have been investigating food banks, their usage and general obesity levels across Wales as part of their Welsh Baccalaureate qualification.
In a bid to improve people’s lives in the Ffestiniog area, pupils have been purchasing local produce and sanitary products to donate to their local food bank using money raised from selling healthy snacks in school.
The project began with an awareness raising session when the Year 10 class showed some of their younger schoolmates the film Supersize Me - a 2004 American documentary film starring Morgan Spurlock who eats nothing but McDonalds food for a month and the drastic effect that had on his life.
In addition, the pupils held three different school shop sessions, where they baked and prepared their own healthy food to sell at break time.
Raising £100 in profit, they then took their money to spend their money in local shops, the Model Bakery in Blaenau Ffestiniog, and the local family chemist.
Once purchased, the pupils proceeded to give their produce to the Blaenau food bank, so that the students have supplied healthy food to the most needy in the area.
