MEIRIONNYDD’S newest ‘super school’ has a name.

Preparations for the new all through area school in the Dolgellau catchment took another step forward last week.

The official name of the 3-16 all-through school that will serve the area from September 2017 will be Ysgol Bro Idris.

The name of the school was officially unveiled by a representation of pupils who will attend the new school, located in the shadow of Cader Idris.

Pupils, the headteacher of the new school Jano Owen and representatives of the shadow governing body made their way to the shores of Llyn Gafr, a lake nestled below the peak of Cader Idris, after being guided by Rhys Gwynn, local Snowdonia National Park warden.

Jano Owen said: “The announcement of the new name for the school is a very symbolic step forward in its establishment.

“What better way to do this than linking the name with one of the most recognisable mountains in Meirionnydd?

“It’s great to choose an official name which reflects the surrounding area and which has emerged from suggestions made by the communities it will serve.”

The name emerged following consultation with existing schools and the wider community in the catchment area.
