COLEG Meirion-Dwyfor officially launched the 2019 All Wales Coding Competition last week at Ysgol Glan y Môr, Pwllheli.

The aim of the competition is to promote computing and programming skills among primary and secondary school children aged between seven and 16 who attend a school in Wales, or who are members of a club in Wales.

The challenge will be to create a computer game on the theme of ‘Discovery and Adventure’.

The competition will contribute significantly to the Welsh Government’s aim of getting more children and young people into these areas of growth in Wales, and will be an opportunity to ensure that children are introduced to those skills that are in high demand.

One of the main sponsors is the Widening Access Centre at Bangor University, and Delyth Murphy, head of the centre, said: “We are extremely proud to sponsor the competition again this year. We recognise how important it is to encourage children and young people from across Wales to develop coding and programming skills, and to give them as many opportunities as possible to do so.”

Alwen Williams, director of BT Cymru, said: “BT realises the importance of creating an interest among children and young people in the use of technology and we are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor on this exciting project which will give the children of Wales essential skills.”

The competition is open until 31 January 2019, and the awards ceremony will take place on 7 March 2019.
