A project aimed at encouraging youngsters and parents to learn some Welsh has proved a hit.

Clwb Cwtsh introduces Welsh words and phrases for parents and carers to use at home with their young children. The sessions are full of fun and music, with plenty of encouragement and support. They are free to the user and include a workbook as well as lessons.

It’s a partnership between the National Centre for Learning Welsh and Early Years specialists, Mudiad Meithrin. Since September 2020, Clwb Cwtsh is available as virtual sessions.

The free sessions in Ceredigion and Powys will be starting up again in October and people are being encouraged to sign up for their free lessons as soon as possible.

Emyr Wyn Williams has been a tutor with Clwb Cwtsh for the last 12 months.

“What we’ve found over the last year is that, often, Clwb Cwtsh is one of the few opportunities that people have had to socialise, to have some sort of normality, and to make friends.

“They learn Welsh in a friendly atmosphere, and we have fun. But also, lack of childcare is not a barrier to taking part as the child can be present too.

“Even though it’s online we still see each other face to face, it’s not like teaching a person without seeing them. You can see them pronouncing the words and trying hard – and that’s a very positive experience for everyone.”

The next sessions are starting in October. To learn more about the free Clwb Cwtsh sessions in your area, email [email protected]u or drop us a line on 01970 639639.
