AN ABERYSTWYTH primary school has been handed a glowing report from inspectors who rated it in the top band for all five inspection categories putting it among the top schools in the country.

Ysgol Plascrug community school, which is already a “pioneer school” and is working with the Welsh Government and other schools to take forward developments relating to the curriculum, has been asked by Estyn to share its excellent practice on its website for other schools to follow.

The 448-pupil school is a symbol of multi-cultural Aberystwyth with around a quarter of pupils from countries overseas, with 38 countries represented and 27 different languages spoken at the school.

The school was rated ‘excellent’ by Estyn in all categories of a new inspection framework introduced last year, in its report released this week.

Inspectors rated the school ‘excellent’ for standards; wellbeing and attitudes to learning; teaching and learning experiences; care, support and guidance; and leadership and management.

Headteacher Menna Sweeney said: “We are all very proud of our school and are thrilled with the excellent inspection report.

“It reflects the hard work and commitment of all stakeholders to ensure every pupil has high-quality learning experiences that enables them to develop as confident independent learners.

“Every child matters at and we celebrate their achievements in and out of the classroom.

“I am very proud and honoured to be headteacher at Plascrug.”
