DOLGELLAU rockers Swnami will be headlining the last night of one of Wales’ foremost cultural events.
Supporting them will be ‘The Voice’ quarter-finalist Alys Williams, Fleur de Lys and local band Chroma.
This will be the second year the Urdd have offered live music on the last Saturday of the Eisteddfod, with a gig and bar on the festival site.
These changes were introduced following a request from the Urdd’s national youth forum, Bwrdd Syr Ifanc.
The Eisteddfod will be held on the fields of Bridgend College’s Pencoed Campus on 29 May unil 3 June, and the organisers are expecting around 90,000 visitors during the week.
Swnami lead singer, Ifan Siôn, said: “It is a privilege that Urdd members have chosen Swnami to close what was one of last summer’s most successful gigs.
“It is great that the Urdd Eisteddfod offer a stage for young Welsh bands and somewhere young people can enjoy and relax. The final Saturday is an opportunity to celebrate the end of a great week competing at the Urdd Eisteddfod.”
The gig is organised with the support of BBC Radio Cymru, who will be broadcasting live from the event.
The Urdd and BBC Radio Cymru will also be working together to stage three gigs in the spring at the Urdd residential centres - on of which will be in Bala.
One of the young people that attended the gig last year was Megan Elias, who also won the 2016 Welsh Learner’s Medal.
“I think it’s very important that the Urdd offer a gig at the end of the week, as it will encourage more young people to visit the festival,” she said.
“I’ve got friends that only visited the Eisteddfod because of the gig last year, which is great for the Eisteddfod to attract new customers. It is a brilliant way to celebrate a week of success with family, friends and other people that have travelled from across Wales.”
Branwen Haf, Urdd Eisteddfod assistant organiser, added: “It was amazing seeing over a thousand young people enjoying the gig on the final Saturday of the Urdd Eisteddfod last year. As an organisation it is so important that we listen to our member and we did this by realising their wishes of holding a gig. We’ve listened to their feedback again this year by extending the hours and offering one more band and I am confident that it will be a great success.”
