A Porthmadog sports club have been recognised for their contribution to making “football tick”.
Porthmadog Community Sport, which started in 2016, utilise sport, particularly football, to help aspire people to be more active, healthy and knowledgeable.
The club have said they are “delighted and honoured” after receiving the North Wales Fun Football Providers of the Year for 2019 award, in the FAW McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards.
The McDonald’s FAW Grassroots Football Awards “celebrate the hard work of the unsung heroes who make football tick”.
Gethin Jones, head of coaching at Porthmadog Community Sport, said: “It’s been a real shock finding out that we have been awarded the north Wales Fun Football Providers of the Year award. I didn’t even know our organisation was up for nomination.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers, partners, participants, sponsors and partner achoo for their support over that past year. It’s a real honour to receive this award and its great that we can provide the provision we do to our community.”
Porthmadog Community Sport are accredited by the FAW through the fun football program and have set up programs such as after-school clubs, curriculum-based sessions, girls only provisions, and holiday clubs.
The club also won the Fun Football Provider of the Year award nationally in 2017.
There is a team of coaches and volunteers to help them deliver the programs, and they work alongside partners such as Sported, the local authority, Street Games, Mantell Gwynedd and Babi Pur.
As well as their community engagement programs, the club also have girls competing in the North Wales Girls League.
The girls compete in the under 10, under 12, and under 14 groups, with the under 14s at the top this year before the season was cut short by the coronavirus outbreak.
