OPERATORS of one of the few remaining theatres in Meirionnydd is calling on local councils to help secure its future.
Although the Dragon Theatre (Theatr y Ddraig) in Barmouth has just received a £10,000 grant from Barmouth Town Council and is at no immediate risk of closure, the theatre is aware it will “face challenges” in the coming years and will require investment to keep providing entertainment for residents in Meirionnydd and further afield.
Last year saw the closure of Neuadd Buddug, in Bala, as well as Theatr Ardudwy, in Harlech, leaving local arts lovers with fewer options than ever before.
The board which runs the theatre has approached local councils for potential investments in a bid to safeguard the much-loved asset, but admits that so far the feedback has been “disappointing”.
Gethin Williams, chair of Dragon Theatre community interest charity, who also represents Barmouth as a county and town councillor, was keen for as many people as possible to support the building.
“The board is extremely thankful for the continued support shown by Barmouth Town Council on two levels – through their annual grant toward the running of the theatre and now this fantastic contribution toward maintaining the building and so ensuring the continued services and events program for the extended community to enjoy,” he told the Cambrian News.
“The Theatre is an important asset toward the wider community and tourism along the Ardudwy coast and the Mawddach reach.
“We do however face challenges going forward and so the board has written to all local councils which have electorate that frequently use the building for support in a similar vein to that of Harlech swimming pool.
“So far the feedback has been disappointing, however we will continue to put the case to build support for this important local amenity.”
