A public consultation on a £5 million project to build an overtaking lane off Llangurig roundabout is currently underway.
The consultation on a £5.1m proposal to build an overtaking lane, exiting the existing Llangurig roundabout in the northbound direction along the A470 towards Llanidloes, was launched on 4 March.
The consultation has been extended and will now finish on 30 April.
Blaen Hafren county councillor Phyl Davies said: “I fully support improvements in the strategic road network in Powys especially if they improve safety.
“This specific improvement is being discussed by the local community council shortly and I want to hear the views of local residents before I make representations to ensure I am fully aware of any concerns.
“We need to open up rural Wales to ensure our key industries and our economy can thrive this is through digital infrastructure as well as our road network.
“The fact we are being recognised by Welsh Government as requiring investment is very welcome.”
The consultation document states: “A470 Llangurig has been identified as one of the priority schemes within the programme. The A470 to the north of the junction with the A44 has had up to six accidents in the last five years with one accident as a result of an overtaking vehicle.
“Along the A470 north of Llangurig roundabout, there is a section of sub standard road geometry which causes reduced visibility for road users. This can create an element of driver frustration due to being caught behind slower moving vehicles travelling northbound, without the chance to pass safely.”
The Llangurig Safety Scheme forms part of the Mid Wales Safety Schemes Programme, launched by the Welsh Government to “improve safety, resilience and movement” at “pinch points on the Trunk Road network through Wales”.
