THE latest community news from Porthmadog

Quakers

THE group offered their thanks to all who attended the public meeting on climate change and flooding in the Porthmadog area on a cold winter evening.

There were 57 people in the audience; 29 left their email addresses, 25 of whom are not connected to the Quakers

There were five feedback forms which gave useful suggestions for a further meeting.

Several others spoke about holding a subsequent meeting, so it was decided to do so in the not too distant future.

A total of £70.70 was donated.

Members of the group have discussed with Porthmadog Town Council the benefits of establishing a Flood Partnership Group, similar to other flood risk communities, so that local community representatives can meet with flood risk authorities and emergency services to discuss key issues at key times in the development of the strategy.

The town council would chair this group and would normally be supported through invitation by Gwynedd Council, Natural Resources Wales and Dwr Cymru.

The town council would normally adopt a community flood plan and recruit volunteering flood wardens in the area, the group heard.

The National Flood Forum charity, set up to help people after floods, is advising people in Tremadog affected by floods the year before last.

The charity has some expertise in how to get properties insured if they have previously been flooded.
