Gerddi Gardens

GERDDI Bro Ddyfi Gardens have appointed Anita O’Flynn as their new assistant volunteers’ co-ordinator. Anita has extensive experience in community and therapeutic gardening and is a dab hand at DIY. Recently, Anita ran a ‘wild cooking’ session at the gardens, making elderflower fritters, which was a great hit with volunteers and visitors, including families with children – a great opportunity to enthuse our younger visitors about outdoor activities.

Gerddi is hosting a Pollinator Festival on Saturday, 17 August, with Edible Mach Maethlon. The event will aim to celebrate all pollinators, look at the problems these insects are facing, and have fun and educational activities for all ages to explore what we can do to support and protect them. Angela Paxton has taken on the post of ‘Bee Champion’ for Machynlleth and is keen to do her bit for pollinators in general.

The group will be taking its volunteers on some day trips to other community projects to help out and get ideas and inspiration, including the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT). Cat has organic, wildlife friendly gardens, and the Bangor Forest Garden for their Sustainable Sunday open event and workday.

Ladies’ bowls

ON 25 June, although early days in this year’s Montgomeryshire County Ladies’ League, Machynlleth ladies (seven points) secured a valuable 10-shot victory at near neighbours Carno ladies (two pints), to lead the table by two points from current champions Berriew ladies, prior to their top-of-the-table clash at Berriew.

Four of the town’s lady bowlers made spectacular progress in the Mid Wales Ladies’ Bowling Association’s Open Rinks competition.

Played at Queens’ Road BC, Aberystwyth, on Sunday, 30 June, Skip Betty Fleming steered her foursome of Sue Mount, Yvonne Jones and Kyli Williams to two superb victories, claiming their berth in the semi-finals thanks to a comfortable win over a foursome from Knighton and an 8-shot verdict over one of the favourites from Berriew. The four ladies will now travel to Talgarth BC for the semi-finals and hopefully, the final.

What are Zines?

A ZINE is a small-circulation, selfpublished work of original texts and images, usually reproduced by a photocopier. They are the product of either a single person or a small group and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation.

There will be a Zine-making workshop on Saturday, 13 July, at The Swallows, between 10am and 11.30am, suitable for children aged between eight and 14.
