August activities began on the carnival field with an exhibition of people from Llanon who had received national recognition, from Rev Jenkin Alban Davies in 1914 to current holders of national awards.

The exhibition, which is by no means a comprehensive collection, is now on display in Llansantffraed Church. If anyone knows of any other national achievers from Llanon, they are asked to contact the society by email to [email protected]

Whilst tidying the society cupboard, Helen Tinsley came across an issue of the Guardian for 6 August 1968. This was the inspiration for her talk “A Glimpse of what was happening 50 years ago” on Monday, 6 August.

For many members it was a trip down memory lane prompting discussion on what had changed in 50 years and what remained the same.

In 1968 there was the first heart transplant in Britain, anti-war demonstrations, ‘swinging London’ and the UK’s application to join the EEC was still pending.

The next meeting will be in the Reading Room on Monday, 3 September, when Hywel Davies will talk on “Fleeing Franco”.
