A BORTH man has been awarded a medal in recognition of his “exemplary” 40 years of service as a coastguard.
George Crumpler, HMCG area commander for the entire section of coast from Cardigan to Llandudno, was presented with a second clasp for his long-service medal by the chief executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Sir Alan Massey.
George joined the service as an auxiliary coastguard in Aberystwyth on 7 October 1975 and was a member of that team for 15 years before becoming a full-time coastguard officer in Milford Haven in December 1990.
He was a watch officer in Milford Haven until June 2000 when he returned to Aberystwyth, initially on temporary promotion before his position was made permanent in December that year when he was appointed Cambrian sector manager.
In February 2014, George was promoted to coastal operations area commander.
George said: “I am now commander of 21 coastguard teams, with four full-time staff, and anything up to 220 volunteer coastguard rescue officers.”
