A COLEG Ceredigion second-year Level 3 Childcare and Education student received a gold award in recognition of her voluntary work.
Alicia Jay Walton, a student at the Aberystwyth campus, was presented with The Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award at St James’ Palace by Team GB Olympic cyclist Nicole Cook.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme is the world’s leading youth achievement award, giving millions of 14 to 24-year-olds the opportunity to be the very best they can be.
The gold award is in recognition of voluntary experience and team work.
Alicia said: “There were three elements to the award which I had to undertake over a period of 12 months.
“I carried out voluntary work through the Girl Guides, completed physical training through swimming and demonstrated a skill by singing. We also had to take part in a residential event at Llain Activity Centre, followed by a practice expedition and a qualifying expedition.
Allison Davies, childcare and education lecturer, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and a testimony to Alicia’s drive and determination. It has helped Alicia gain new skills and confidence that will benefit her personal and professional development.”
