For many in their youth, Dolgellau square in the 1950s was a great place to socialise.
Groups would stroll around the town, but were always mindful of the time.
A glance at the clock on Plas Newydd helped you to judge whether to catch the last bus or train, or get a lift home.
“This glancing at the clock became a habit for me and for others,” Dolgellau resident Colin White recalls.
“Watches were a rarity then. Now we may once again glance up at the clock and check how our day is going thanks to my old classmate Rhagfyr Lewis’s family, who agreed to restore the clock to commemorate Rhagfyr’s untimely passing.
“Rhagfyr, twice mayor of Dolgellau, was himself often seen in the square pronouncing on matters of the day and would, I know, be happy to see the clock restored.”
Mr White added: “May I thank the Lewis family for funding the project and also the following: Mark and Louise (Louloupurple) for hosting the clock, John Ellis Treftadaeth Treflun Dolgellau, electrician Jamie Skelton, Bob Gunn design engineer, Neville Evans engineer, Paul Cook builder, the National Park, Partneriaeth Dolgellau Partnership and all of who enthusiastically contributed to putting back the clock so we may once more measure our comings and goings in the town’s greatest forum, Eldon Square.”
