A cinema in Blaenau Ffestiniogwent back in time last week when it put on a dementia-friendly showing of a cult 1940s film.

The CellB cinema put on a showing of the Welsh film, The Proud Valley and also transformed the cinema to give moviegoers the full 1940’s cinema experience.

On Wednesday, 13 November, residents of Bryn Blodau Care Home were treated to the fun and interactive day out, during which local adverts from the 1940s were shown before the screening of Paul Robeson’s film.

Those with a sweet tooth also got to enjoy an old-fashioned ice cream and sweets break mid-screening.

Previous dementia-friendly screenings at CellB have proved popular and included viewings of Jail House Rock and Singing in the Rain.

CellB’s building is a suitable venue for vintage films having been created on the site of the town’s Victorian police station.

Rhys Roberts, owner of Cellb, is passionate about working together with the community and organising events which to benefit all ages.

And he has a personal reason for offering dementia-friendly screenings, as he explained.

“The subject is close to me heart as my father Will Roberts suffered many years of dementia before he passed away in 2005.”

Commenting on the screening, he added: “We had seven or eight volunteers dressed in 1940s costume.

“At 1pm the elderly people came in. They were greeted by staff and volunteers, all of them dressed up. We had a selection of old fashioned sweets and cinema posters on the way in and 1940s music [played] through the cinema too.

“We had an amazing reaction, it was very touching. There were big smiles everywhere.”
