A MACHYNLLETH church opened its doors to the public at the weekend to showcase the realisation of two years of renovation works.

Restoration work began on St Peter’s Church, on Penrallt Street, in September 2014, after the dilapidated church hall was put up for sale to help fund the creation of new facilities at the rear of the church. And Cllr Michael Williams has praised the church leadership for the “wonderful” improvements, which include a new community hall, offices, shop and coffee shop, and said residents who attended the open day on Saturday were “very enthusiastic”.

“I have every admiration for the church, who have raised the means to make such wonderful improvements to the church,” Cllr Williams told the Cambrian News this week.

“It is for the benefit of the church and its parishioners, but also of huge benefit to the community, and I have nothing but admiration.

“It has taken them about two years from start to finish and I must congratulate the workmanship I could see around me.”
