THE wife of an Aberystwyth doctor who lost his battle against a brain tumour last year has vowed to raise money for charity with a walk in his memory.

On 30 March last year the much admired local GP Dr Richard Edwards passed away after being diagnosed with a brain tumour just nine months earlier.

Now a year on from his passing, his wife, Dana, is raising money for the Brain Tumour Charity in his memory.

“Due to limitations imposed because of Covid we were unable to arrange for Richard the farewell he deserved, the public recognition of his importance to us as a family but also to his friends and to patients he had cared for over the years,” Dana said.

“Now I want to do something positive to raise money in his name.

“Today there are 88,000 people living with such a tumour in Britain and the Brain Tumour Charity is encouraging people to walk, run or cycle 88 miles to fund more research into the illness.

“Unlike many other cancers, the treatment of brain cancer has not changed much in years, due to a lack of funding to drive the research.

“As a result being diagnosed is very bad news.

“It is the brain that allows us to move and communicate, which controls our emotions and stores our memories.

“For those living with the condition it can also be very difficult.”

Dana plans to walk the 88 miles in six consecutive days between 12 and 17 April - averaging around 15 miles a day.

“The Brain Tumour Charity is the world’s leading brain tumour charity and the largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours globally,” Dana said.

“Committed to saving and improving lives, they’re moving further, faster to help every single person affected by a brain tumour.

They’re set on finding new treatments, offering the highest level of support and driving urgent change.

“And they’re doing it right now.

“Because they understand that when you, or someone you love, is diagnosed with a brain tumour a cure really can’t wait.”

After setting an initial fund-raising goal of £100, Dana has already smashed the target, raising £245.

The Brain Tumour Charity events will see thousands of fund-raisers across Britain raising money through the 88-mile challenge.

The funds “will go towards our goals of doubling survival and halving the harm”, the charity said, and the challenger will run for three months.

All of Dana’s walks for the charity will be in Ceredigion.
