People in Borth have been adding a splash of colour to the village.

Following the sad news that this year’s carnival has had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, the carnival committee decided to push on with its annual Chalkfest over the weekend.

This is the fourth year the Chalkfest has been held and is the brainchild of local artist and committee member Dean Tweedy (Marvellous Murals), who has successfully organised this event every year.

Budding artists covered over a mile of the sea wall in chalk murals, from dragons and sea monsters to sunsets.

Dean said: “The idea is simple. I provide the chalks and pastels, we use the long sea wall as a canvas and any artist that wants to can paint a picture on a section of it. We put out collection tins and money raised from the viewing public goes towards local charities.

“Borth is an amazing community that seems to attract creative people and this weekend they have come out in droves.

“The weather was kind to us this year and over the weekend we have created a public art gallery that must be over a half mile long! It was so heartwarming to see artists of all calibres working side by side, from individuals, giving it their all, to whole families working to create a piece of art together.

“Being chalk the art is only temporary, but that means that artists are free to be as creative as they want to be and can experiment with this most basic art supply. The more it rains the more the art will wash away, but we will keep the photos and the memories forever.”

Borth Carnival always raises money for local groups and last year, despite not having a procession, the committee has managed to raise and distribute £5,000.

Borth Carnival is hoping to do the same again this year and has set up a JustGiving page on the Borth Carnival Facebook page.
