Madam,

I am writing in support of Mark Williams’ letter about the lack of provision of care beds in Ceredigion and the dire situation that is likely to develop by 2020.

When Ceredigion council was arguing for the closure of Bodlondeb last year, one of its justifications was the frequently repeated line about the high number of vacancies in residential homes in the county. At no time were these figures broken down to show that the vacancies were in the council-run homes, primarily in Bodlondeb itself, where the council controlled access. The private residential homes were full even then.

The figures on occupancy were tucked away on the council’s own website – not directly accessible via its search facility. When attention was drawn to these figures in order to counter the argument about a surplus of residential beds in the county, the figures disappeared completely from the website.

Mark said he could only guess at the council’s logic behind the closure of Bodlondeb, given the lack of care beds in the county. I don’t think that logic has anything to do with it at all.

Yours etc,

Gwenda Williams, Rhydyfelin, Aberystwyth.
