A PWLLHELI cage fighter has become a European mixed martial arts champion and now hopes to take on the world.

MMA fighter Danny William, a former Glan y Môr student, is the new European amateur lightweight champion after a scintillating fight in Cardiff.

The 27-year-old secured the European crown with a unanimous decision victory over fellow Welshman Jordan Peake at last week’s Cage Warriors 100, producing the “best fight of his career” and winning a profession five-fight contract.

The North Walian plans to build on his weekend title success by targeting selection for the IMMAF World Championships in Bahrain, where the globe’s best amateur fighters will compete in November 2019.

Alternatively, he might drop a weight class and challenge for featherweight Cage Warriors Academy North West title in February at Liverpool Exhibition Centre.

Both options are available for the 27-year-old who has set up his own gym with the help of local businesses in the heart of his home town.

“I’m super happy with the result,” said Danny, who remains modest and focussed despite his success.

“The fight was my toughest to date, on paper my opponent was undefeated and ranked seventh out of 832 active amateur lightweights. Out of all 30 of my bouts this carried the most pressure.

“The fight itself started at the weigh ins which were held on the fight day itself.

“Our stare down was intense, neither of us took an eye off each for their for the duration of the head to head. Just as we separated I felt a chink in his armour.

“Only something small but as we separated I felt that I had edged something on him mentally. I wanted this fight more than anything else so maybe he could see that.”
