A BUSY road opposite a Porthmadog secondary school has been branded ‘an accident waiting to happen’ due to risky crossing points for children.
The safety concerns have been raised by Nia Jeffreys, who is Plaid Cymru’s candidate for the Porthmadog East ward in the Gwynedd Council election in May next year.
Nia is now calling for a safe way for Porthmadog youngsters to cross the road outside Ysgol Eifionydd.
She said: “Many people are worried about traffic through Porthmadog and crossing the high street safely.
“In particular, the road outside Ysgol Eifionydd is very busy, with four-way traffic and children crossing the road to school.
“I often walk past the school at 3.30pm and can see that it is difficult for the youngsters to get a safe gap in traffic in order to cross safely.
“I fear there is an accident waiting to happen outside the school. We must protect Porthmadog youngsters.
“If a zebra crossing is not workable, because of the nearby railway crossing, all other options must be considered, for example a lollipop person.
“I am calling for a review of the town’s traffic system as there are also problems higher up the street outside the post office, where again it is difficult to cross the road safely.”
A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “Whilst concerns have not been raised with the council’s Transportation and Street Care Service regarding traffic at this location, officers would be happy to discuss the matter.
