THE Asda store in Pwllheli is installing bilingual self-service tills so that customers can operate the scanners in Welsh as well as in English.

The store said that it was reacting to customer demand.

Jo Scott, community life champion at the store, said: “We have listened to the views of customers for more services to be in Welsh. We’re currently in the process of perfecting the till system and reacting to customer feedback.

“We’re continuing to take on board customer comments and making tweaks to the machines as we go.

“So many of our customers and colleagues are Welsh speaking, so it’s great that our services now reflect that.”

Martyn Croydon, Welsh Learner of the Year 2013, commented on Twitter: “Gwych!! O’r diwedd, tiliau dwyieithog yn Asda Pwllheli. Cofiwch ddefnyddio’r Gymraeg! :) #PethauBychain”

And Martyn added: “It’s great to see the effort that Asda is making to support the Welsh language and giving opportunities to use Welsh whilst shopping.

“Thank you to Jo for all her hard work.”
