SCORES of angry protesters marched through the streets of Aberystwyth on Saturday demanding that plans to close Aberystwyth’s Post Office are abandoned.

Post Office Ltd sparked outrage when it announced its intention to close the main post office in Great Darkgate Street with the loss of seven jobs and instead provide services through a franchise in a town-centre shop.

Protesters marched from Trefechan into the town centre, finishing in Owain Glyndwr Square where speakers from a range of political parties hit out at the proposals.

A Save Aberystwyth Post Office Campaign spokesperson for the campaign group said: “Local people feel extremely strongly about this issue.”

Ceredigion AM Elin Jones raised the potential closure of the post office in the Welsh Assembly, with First Minister Carwyn Jones admitting that it would be unacceptable to lose Aberystwyth’s Crown Post Office.

Ms Jones said: “I’m pleased that the First Minister agreed with me that it would be a great loss if Aberystwyth were to see its Post Office downgraded and moved from its current location.

“The strength of feeling at the public meeting in the Morlan Centre was remarkable. People in the Aberystwyth area clearly won’t just accept this.”

The Post Office said that operations at Aberystwyth will go out to tender for 28 days, after which the franchise offers will be reviewed and a public consultation will take place.
