THE OWNER of Canolfan Teifi has rejected overtures from Cardigan Town Council to help keep a lift at the rear of the shopping centre running.

The lift, which has provided access from the Greenfield Square car park for over 20 years, has been put out of service by Principality Holdings Ltd following the recent closure of the QS store.

Councillors say it is a valuable facility well-used by disabled people and have raised the possibility of contributing to its running costs.

But Nick Laing, of Principality Holdings, has ruled out the move, saying that the lifts and toilet facilities in Canolfan Teifi were not a public service and that it was “unfair” to expect the company to provide a public access from the car park to the high street as well as toilet facilities for all.

“These services are provided for customers of the Canolfan Teifi shops and the library and it is not a public thoroughfare, but has been treated as such by many people, causing our company many extra costs in cleaning the walkways and toilets over the years because of persons who have no intention of visiting our tenants’ shops and the library,” he told the Cambrian News.

The library is due to relocate to smaller premises in Morgan Street in March, but Mr Laing maintained that had Ceredigion County Council pursued their original plan of moving their Morgan Street offices into Canolfan Teifi the outlook would have been very different.
