A BRAND new cinema in Meirionnydd is set to open its doors next month.

Cellb, a multiuse facility based in Blaenau Ffestiniog’s old Police Station, will open on Friday, 22 July, showing Steven Spielberg’s brand new take on Roald Dahl’s The BFG.

The new 50-seater auditorium was originally set to be more of a “cool and quirky” art house theatre but following discussions with youngsters in the town, project leader Rhys Roberts has decided that all of the latest Hollywood hits will be screened in the new building thus “changing the ethos” of Cellb.

There will also be a series of local, Welsh and independent films shown on occasion.

The project will create four permanent jobs for Blaenau Ffestiniog residents and the new digital film equipment will be the very best available following a generous six-figure grant from Arts Council of Wales and Magnox.

Rhys Roberts was delighted to see the town’s vision of a new performance centre take shape.

He said: “Gwallgofiaid, the youth training charity, recently received £100,000 funding from the Arts Council of Wales and Magnox, enabling us to install a state of the art 50-seater auditorium with digital cinema system and satellite, it all looks fantastic."
