BARMOUTH’S leisure centre made an unprecedented profit last year as Gwynedd council celebrates changes which have seen incomes rise and expenditure fall at centres across the county.
The Pavilion Leisure Centre in Barmouth was one of only two centres to record a profit along with the Arfon Tennis Centre in Caernarfon.
The figures, compiled to go before Gwynedd’s scrutiny committee on Tuesday, come after several centres were threatened with deeper cuts last year.
While Barmouth made just over £3,000 surplus compared to a £63,000 loss in 2013/14, Bro Dysynni Leisure Centre in Tywyn recorded a £50,000 decline in income in 2016/17 compared to 2013/14.
A report before members said: “In terms of income, it can be seen that the income situation of most centres has improved but a decline was seen in Bro Dysynni Leisure Centre, Tywyn.
“This is mostly due to the decrease in the number of children that attend swimming lessons regularly in the area and also the reduction in target income compared to 2013/2014.
“It should also be noted that Pavilion Leisure Centre, Barmouth, now attracts an income above the expenditure level under the management of the council.
“This is unprecedented performance, and is an exception to most of the centres in Wales.”
