THE future of Travis Perkins sites in Aberystwyth, Lampeter, Machynlleth and Tywyn is uncertain after the company announced it would be closing 30 branches amid profit warnings.

The UK’s biggest builders merchant, Travis Perkins announced today that it is closing 30 branches, putting 600 jobs at risk.

The company told the Cambrian News that the branches set for closure are not being released - with “no local detail” available at the moment.

Travis Perkins has branches on the Glanyrafon Industrial Estate in Aberystwyth; Sandilands Road in Tywyn; the Treowain Industrial Estate in Machynlleth and at the Llambed Business Park in Lampeter. Each branch employs around 20 staff.

Travis Perkins, which employs 28,000 people and has 2,060 stores, said it was taking the steps due to an “uncertain UK outlook” for next year.

Chief executive John Carter said it was “still too early to predict customer demand in 2017 with certainty”.

“Given this uncertainty we will be closing over 30 branches and making further efficiency driven changes in the supply chain,” he said.

Travis Perkins was one of the biggest fallers on the FTSE 100 following the Brexit vote on fears of a hit to the UK’s property and construction sectors.

Shares in the company fell six per cent in early trading on Wednesday, and are down more than 22 per cent since the referendum.

A spokeswoman for the company said that the changes are part of “an ongoing strategy to optimise the network”.

The spokeswoman added that Travis Perkins has opened 20 branches this financial year, and hired 4,000 staff.
