DOZENS of jobs are set to be lost in Aberystwyth next month with the expected closure of the town’s Game shop and B&Q store.

Staff at the computer game shop on Great Darkgate Street said they have been told by the company that the branch will close on Sunday, 17 April.

And B&Q confirmed plans to close its store on the Parc-y-Llyn retail park in April last year in a monthly newsletter to staff.

A B&Q spokesperson told the Cambrian News: “We have let colleagues at our Aberystwyth store know that their store is one of those planned for closure next financial year.

“Our focus for the coming months is on redeploying as many colleagues as we can within B&Q and the Kingfisher Group.”

The six jobs at the Game store in Aberystwyth were first put under threat in 2012 after the company went into administration facing “serious cashflow and profit issues”.

The Aberystwyth store remained open while administrators found a buyer, with Op Capita eventually buying the company.

In October last year, the company announced a drop in pre-tax profit, which they said was due to “operating costs”.

While it is not known which companies may take over the two prime sites, there is speculation that coffee chain Caffe Nero could take over the Game shop.

Caffe Nero would only tell the Cambrian News that a site viewing of premises has “been arranged for a couple of weeks time”

A spokesperson said: “At this point in time, we are still in detailed discussions with the landlord, but hoping that final agreements will be in place within the next couple of weeks.”
