FOOTBALL players and members of the public are being put at risk by “mindless idiots” who are littering a public field with shards of broken glass, it was claimed this week.

Staff at Dolgellau Athletic Amateur Football Club have lambasted the people responsible for leaving the dangerous refuse on the edge of the town’s football field.

Two separate incidents have been reported in just a matter of days — with the second event possibly occurring as a spiteful response to the club’s request to clear away their own litter.

The first incident happened on Thursday evening (18 February) with the second taking place just a few days later on Sunday, 21 February.

A Facebook post from the football club read: “Unbelievably, another incident occurred last Sunday night.

“More broken glass, more than previously.

“A hazard to the public and, more so, to those youngsters and seniors using the pitch and facilities.

“It beggars belief how this is repeated and the club have no alternative other than to involve the police, trustees and interrogate CCTV coverage.

“If anyone out there has any information please either inform a member of the club or the police as this must stop before someone is seriously injured.

“Thank you to those who are supporting us.”

Dolgellau Athletic Amateur Football Club secretary Stephen Parry was equally aghast.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen,” he said.

“What if one of our junior players goes in for a slide tackle and ends up splitting open his leg?

“We’re asking the perpetrators to stop, simple as that.

“We don’t mind you using our facilities, but please respect them, leave them as you found them.

“It’s not just the players, it’s us who’s put at risk when we’re picking the glass up — it’s just mindless idiocy.

“The police will be contacting spot checks from now on, but it would be great if everyone could keep an eye out on what’s happening to.

“This is our field, let’s keep it safe for everyone.”
