A LAMPETER bone marrow donor has struck up a remarkable Transatlantic friendship with a Canadian man whose life he helped save.

Stem cells donated by Emyr Williams were flown out to Canada and given to an Alberta family man stricken with cancer.

Milton Becker is now cancer-free and he and Emyr have since become firm friends.

In an emotional Facebook post to Emyr, Mr Becker’s daughter, Rhonda, told him: “It takes a special person to give so much, especially to a complete stranger.

“Your generosity has given our dad back – thank you from the very bottom of our hearts.”

Emyr recalled: “I became quite emotional when I read those words.”

He and Mr Becker have been in contact for the last eight or nine months talking on the phone and exchanging letters.

“In the last six months we have been friends on Facebook and I’m also friends with his wife, children, relatives and his friends,” said Emyr.

“They keep calling me a hero, but I don’t feel like one. I would do it again tomorrow – I would do it again for anyone.”
