A PENNANT artist has created a huge globe out of aluminium scrap in protest at the number of discarded drinks cans and other forms of litter “blighting” the roads near his home.

Michael Burridge (pictured) worked for several weeks in total over the last year and used almost 3,000 rivets to construct Planet Can – representing the Earth – around a temporary wooden frame.

He supplied the finishing touch by wiring together around its base some 200 cans picked up from local roadside verges where they had been tossed from passing cars.

“There is a lot of ‘takeaway’ litter discarded in this area because the distance from (probably) Aberystwyth coincides with the time it takes for people to eat their food,” Mr Burridge, 68, told the Cambrian News.

“For every aluminium can I found there were probably ten plastic bottles or discarded takeaway food cartons. But it doesn’t stop there as I often find glass bottles and other waste.

“I decided to concentrate on the cans because aluminium can by recycled easily and endlessly and so has a positive message.

“The message I’m trying to convey is to ask people to think before they throw, litter doesn’t disappear once it’s out of the car."
