A YOUNG woman from Llanarth who has been battling anorexia for several years is urging fellow sufferers to seek the appropriate help.

Charlotte May, a 26-year-old year-old psychology student at University of Wales Trinity St Davids, Carmarthen, has just completed her first year of studies having spent the previous two years receiving treatment at Glangwili Hospital.

“I put my family and friends through hell with this horrid eating disorder,” she told the Cambrian News. “I missed out on life, even the simple things, shopping, going for coffee and cake, meals out, cinema, all sorts. I still struggle with certain ‘fear foods’ but I am challenging myself every day and working with my team to make food less of an issue.

“I eat some foods now and can’t believe I’m doing it because I never thought I would eat nice food again. Yes, I still feel guilty sometimes but I try and fight those thoughts.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice – anorexia is a lot more common than you might think and there is help out there even though it took me five years to get the right kind.

“Never give up because I never thought I would be where I am today – it’s hard work but so worth it to live life again. There are many organisations out there that will help you such as Mind, but your GP should help too.”
