A Tremadog café owner known for legendary adventures and alpine climbing will complete one final solo climb at the age of 82.
Eric Jones has lived his whole life on the edge of danger. He has travelled the globe completing daring deeds, and many of his accomplishments have been captured on film.
Eric dreams of one final, epic climb – the Delago Tower, part of the Italian Dolomites, where he completed his very first alpine climb in the 60s – and his journey to the top of the tower is captured in The Last Climb: Eric Jones.
The TV show documents his preparation as he embarks on his journey, and reflects on what has driven him to face danger head-on throughout his life.
Raised on a family farm near Corwen, Eric Jones has been climbing for over 50 years.
It was a passion that was first forged in Snowdonia. Throughout the 70s and 80s, Eric sought out some of the most iconic, and dangerous mountains to climb. Many of his challenges were captured in award winning films, including his climbs of the Eiger and the Matterhorn in Switzerland, bringing the thrill of alpine climbing to a global audience.
His wife Ann says: “You can’t keep doing it at that level and get away with it. There comes a time when you have to kind of think, ‘okay, judgement goes, strength goes. Why do you need to keep doing this?’”
Find out how the Tremadog café owner gets on in The Last Climb: Eric Jones, on BBC 2 Wales this Saturday, 17 August, at 8pm.
