The paddling pool on Aberystwyth’s north promenade is to be filled in and turned into a seating area, Ceredigion County Council has announced.

A spokesperson for Ceredigion County Council confirmed this afternoon that the former paddling pool is to be filled in and turned into a seating area.

The spokesperson added: “Plans are in place to make improvements in the previous paddling pool area to create more seating along the prom.

“This includes, removing the old sand and railings, levelling and paving the pool area and installing more seating.

“As pedestrian footfall is high this year and more businesses are benefitting from having trade on the seafront, more people will now be able to support local businesses whilst sitting and enjoying the wonderful coastal view for longer.”

The paddling pool was closed in 2016 after storms damaged the pool and sea wall beneath it and it was turned into a sandpit by Advancing Aberystwyth.

The council went on to say that filling the pool in and creating a seating area was a 'temporary solution' adding "it was considered better to improve the area with additional seating instead of leaving it in a poor condition".

"Anything more permanent would be dependent on sea defence works coming forward.

"Previously, Advancing Aberystwyth have provided the sand pit and covered the costs for that. The recent ‘no’ vote means that they are unable to continue with that initiative."
