The Aberystwyth community came together for a ‘moving experience’ in marking the United Nations’ International Day of Peace on Wednesday, 21 September.

The theme of the event this year was End Racism: Build Peace.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said: “Racism continues to poison institutions, social structures, and everyday life in every society. It continues to be a driver of persistent inequality. And it continues to deny people their fundamental human rights. It destabilises societies, undermines democracies, erodes the legitimacy of governments, and… the linkages between racism and gender inequality are unmistakable.”

On the day, Aberystwyth Town Council flew the United Nations peace flag in Aberystwyth Castle’s grounds, opposite The Hut on the seafront.

In the evening, Côr Gobaith sang songs of peace beneath the flag.

Côr Gobaith member Kelvin Mason said: “It was a moving experience to sing together for peace and an end to racism as the sun sank into the sea.

“On the same day thousands of courageous anti-war protesters were being arrested in Russia.

“I think everyone in the choir reflected on the many victims of war and violence all around the world. It’s a gesture of solidarity, and sometimes that’s all we can do to support others.

“It would wonderful be if more people in Aberystwyth knew about the UN Day of Peace so that we could come together as a wider community to show such solidarity.”
