Exhibitions

TWO new environmental-themed exhibitions are heralding spring at community gallery Oriel Flodau/Blossoms Gallery, celebrating the joy of nature from beautiful botanical illustrations to flowers made out of an old umbrella, light bulbs and glass bottles!

The current exhibitions For the Love of Rubbish and Plants and Pollinators are creating quite a talking point. Plants and Pollinators draws on the historic connections between art and natural history, whilst exploring contemporary responses to the symbiotic relationship between plants and pollinating insects. The exhibition enables visitors to see the natural world from different viewpoints and includes a striking mixed media installation by Ticky Lowe, intriguing paper pulp sculptures inspired by microscopic images of seeds by artist Tereska Shepherd and microscope photography by Erin Hyde.Exhibiting artists will also be running a variety of special workshops (pictured) alongside the exhibition starting with an exciting batik on tissue paper workshop with Jenny O’Leary on Saturday, 2 April, from 10am to 4pm.This will be followed by a mixed media painting plants workshop with Tereska Shepherd on Wednesday, 6 April and The Flowering of Early Summer - An Introduction to Mandala Painting with Anne Thomas on Saturday, 30 April. There are also opportunities to get creative every Thursday with Sue Clow and Ruby Roberts, who will be making and demonstrating in Blossoms’ upstairs Eco Gallery throughout their exhibition Made with Love and Rubbish, Be amazed by what you can create with everyday household waste materials using a variety of textile and recycling ideas and techniques, this is definitely a must see exhibition.

Choral Society

TO PERFORM the Requiem, Verdi’s Choral and Orchestral masterpiece, demands a big choir, a big symphony orchestra, four good professional soloists and an excellent conductor, plus a big venue to stage the work in.Aberystwyth is very fortunate in having choir, orchestra and conductor on its doorstep, and on Saturday, 23 April, the Aberystwyth Choral Society performs the work in the Great Hall on the Penglais Campus under the baton of David Russell Hulme. The choir will be joined by professional soloists, soprano Deborah Norman, mezzo-soprano Louise Crane, tenor Justin Lavender and bass/baritone Michael Pearce. Louise Crane and Justin Lavender were two of the soloists at the very well-received performance of Handel’s Messiah which the choir gave in December last year.
