POLICE are still searching for the “mindless” vandals who sprayed graffiti on Aberystwyth’s war memorial.

Members of the British Legion and local politicians were outraged when the word ‘pigfart’ was sprayed on the memorial in the castle grounds.

A reward of more than £600 has been offered for information which helps police get the culprit convicted.

The graffiti, which was quickly removed by Ceredigion County Council, was sprayed over the weekend of 15 January.

But while police launched a request for information and local residents donated cash for the reward fund, there has been no progress in finding the person responsible.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesperson said: “There is no update. We would act on any new information that comes in.”

Llanbadarn Fawr councillor Paul James was one of several people who donated money for the reward and is keen to get the culprit punished through the courts.

Cllr James said the reward fund had received support from a range of people, some of whom were ex-service personnel themselves.

He said there had been outrage from people when they learnt that the memorial had been targeted and said that the reward fund was still on offer to encourage anyone with information to contact the police.

Members of the Aberystwyth branch of the Royal British Legion visited the memorial after it had been cleaned and Colonel Patrick Norrington-Davies, the president of the Aberystwyth branch, said there had been shock amongst members that someone would choose the war memorial to vandalise.
