A Hungarian lecturer at Aberystwyth University was taken to hospital with serious injuries at the weekend after his bicycle was in a horror collision with a van.

Balázs Pintér, who is a senior lecturer in physical sciences, is understood to have been cycling into town down Penglais Hill when the crash happened.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened at around 8.15am on Saturday at the junction between Penglais Hill and Llanbadarn Road.

A police spokesperson said the incident led to the road being closed for several hours to allow a crash investigation to take place, and the cyclist is still in hospital.

They said: “Dyfed-Powys Police is appealing for information following a road traffic collision which occurred on the Penglais Terrace/Llanbadarn Road junction in Aberystwyth.

“The collision, involving a Ford Transit van and a cyclist, was reported at 8.15am on Saturday, 20 April.

“As a result of the collision the cyclist sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital where he currently remains.

“The road was closed for several hours while collision investigation took place and reopened at 1pm on Saturday afternoon.”
