OVER 700 people have signed a petition to save a Pwllheli cinema from being axed by Gwynedd Council.

Last year, the council announced it was carrying out detailed work across all its departments to identify possible options for service cuts and a public consultation was carried out at the end of last year where the public were able to have their say.

The council urged the public to help them where it would be best to make cuts to save almost £9m.

On the list of cuts is Neuadd Dwyfor (right)in Pwllheli which houses a cinema, hosts a variety of plays and ballet performances and also includes a library and tourist information centre.

A petition has now been set up to oppose any decision by Gwynedd Council to close the cinema or downgrade the services there.

The petition is being backed by Pwllheli town councillor, Jonathan Roberts, who said: “Neuadd Dwyfor is one of the area’s most prized assets and I am totally amazed at the stupidity of Gwynedd officials who have even put it on a list of possible cost cuttings.

“It not only houses the only cinema in the area, but houses the tourist information centre that is vital to Pwllheli and the surrounding area but also the only decent library for many miles.”
